Because of the close tolerances involved in wire matrix printers, ribbon guide and shields appear to be necessary. The present expedient provides a ribbon guide and shield element which may be incorporated into the wall of any ribbon cartridge to be used on a matrix printer. The shield consists of a thin material, such as MYLAR* or stainless steel, folded over along its upper and lower edges so as to form a nest between the folds through which the ribbon itself may pass. The shield, of course, contains an appropriate opening through which the matrix printhead may urge the ribbon against the paper.
