This article concerns an absorption pump for use in evacuating a vacuum chamber. The pump features a cylindrical vessel containing a reservoir of absorbing pellets and a helical heat exchange coil. The coil is coaxially located in the vessel and in contact with the pellets. During evacuation, the coil carries liquid nitrogen to enhance absorption by the pellets. Following use, the pellets are regenerated by pumping hot nitrogen through the coil to promote pellet outgassing.
