To provide a flexible memory viewport for displaying main storage areas of different number and length, a fixed format display of memory, e.g., 14 lines of 16 bytes each may be used where each line may optionally display memory which is contiguous or discontiguous with the memory which is displayed by the line above. Thus, for instance, in a displaywriter debug tool application, in a flexible manner a single large contiguous area of memory may be displayed, or as many discontiguous areas may be concurrently displayed as there are display lines. For example, one line might contain old data to be inspected and corrected, and the adjacent line might contain the new data for the same memory area, thus making possible and simplifying a visual comparison of old and new data.
