Abstract

A common assembly procedure for an arm mounted about a shaft is shown in Fig. 1. The arm 5 is placed on the carriage in the open position (as shown), and holes 8, 9 are aligned. The pivot shaft 12 must be pushed through the first set of aligned openings 8, 9 slotted end first. Next the torsion spring 14 must be put in position over pivot shaft 12 with the tang in the carriage-retaining slot 16. Then pivot shaft 12 must be pushed through the remaining aligned openings 8, 9 in the assembly. With the shaft in place, a C-clip 17 is installed on shaft 12 to prevent shaft axial motion. Next the arm must be closed so the load pad 19 contacts the button 20 whereupon a special tool is used to reach in around the shaft, catch the remaining tang on spring 14, wind the spring, and release the tang into the retaining slot in load arm 5.
