Abstract

Developers and users of computer systems need to understand how the systems are being utilized. In a user environment, the emphasis is on maximizing the computer system resources. That is, a user may wish to tune his system to maximize personnel utilization, maximize hardware and software resource usage, minimize processing time, or minimize processing dollars. In a development environment, there is a need to understand how a system is performing in order to eliminate performance bottlenecks, provide input for future designs, or compare one system to another. A common method for obtaining information on computer system performance is to attach a hardware monitor to the system.
