Abstract

In a data processing or word processing application, it is often desirable to duplicate files for archival or backup purposes. In the duplicate file task, however, it is possible to have a source file with one field being longer than the maximum length of the corresponding field in the destination file. When duplicating files, records which have a field longer than the maximum length of the corresponding field in the destination file cannot be copied. It is therefore necessary to inform the user which record is not copied. A solution to this problem is to put the records that cannot be copied into an error file. The error file has the same format as the source file. The operator can display or print the error file after the completion of the duplicate file task.
