Angular Logical Sector Assignment Format

A logical sector format for a multiple platter magnetic disk storage device is described which provides both increased data capacity and reduced seek time. In particular, consecutive logical sectors on each cylinder are read or written on an angle down the length of the cylinder. The drawing shows an example of this angular logical sector assignment format. What is shown is an unfolded view of one of the "cylinders" in the disk file, with the physical sector numbers being shown along the top of the chart and the head numbers being shown along the left side of the chart. The numbers inside the chart are the logical sector numbers. This example is for the case of a disk file having 14 read/write heads. Each head corresponds to a different data track around the circumference of the cylinder.
