Computer-Controlled Variable "Z" Motion

This arrangement converts a single fixed stop Z-motion machine to a computer-controlled variable Z motion for a robot. The original casting 10 is modified so as to have a flat section 12 having openings therein to which stepper motor 13 can be attached. A further opening 20 provides for the mating of stepper motor gear 16 with gear 15 of ball bearing lead screw 14. The lead screw is driven by gear 15 which is driven by gear 16 on the stepper motor. The stepper motor 3 is computer controlled to achieve the commanded stop position. The arrangement provides a computer-controlled variable Z motion. This mechanism is used in conjunction with the existing air cylinder 17 as a solid programmable down stop.
