Abstract

An improved air bearing slider is described having wedge areas w serve to cut and burnish any asperities appearing on a media surface. The slider comprises a recessed zone 1 on each side formed by etching, for example, and a recessed zone 2 in the central area of the slider to produce two rails 3. The rails each have a tapered flat surface 4 at one end and cutting wedges 5 at the other end. The rails 3 create two positive pressure regions produced by air flowing across their surfaces due to the relative motion between the slider and the media surface. As the slider is accessed over the surface of the media, any asperities protruding from the media, having a height greater than the flying height of the cutting wedges 5, are burnished away.
