Prevention of Errors in Display of Columnar Data From Disk Storage

In the display of columnar data, errors can inadvertently result from saving the displayed data in disk storage and later redisplaying the data. Specifically, where there are blanks in the originally displayed data field, reading from disk and then displaying the stored file can result in the data entry for the next adjacent column being displayed where there should be a blank with other adjacent columns similarly displaced. This problem is overcome by writing a character, such as "N" (for null), in the blank field in the control file. Then, when the file is to be redisplayed, reading an "N" is interpreted to display a blank on the screen.
