Abstract

An automated punch apparatus with a punch support arrangement is provided. The punch support arrangement acts to hold the punch in its upward position when the punch is not activated, thus avoiding the problems encountered when the punch element drops into holes previously punched into ceramic green sheet. Automated punch apparatus for forming via holes in ceramic green sheet is described in [*]. Punch apparatus akin to that described in [*] is shown in Fig. 1. As labeled, the iron top-hat portion 1 of the punch arrangement is magnetically coupled to magnet 3 which in turn is coupled to solenoid 5 via plunger 7. In operation, actuation of solenoid 5 causes the downward movement of plunger 7 which in turn activates the carbide punch to pass through the guide bushing into the green sheet.
