An electrothermal printer is described in which printing is accomplished by an electrothermal ribbon operating in contact with thermally sensitive paper. The printer utilizes an electrothermal ribbon 1 in contact with thermally sensitive paper 2. Ribbon 1 comprises a resistive layer 3 and a conductive layer 4. A styli assembly 5 is mounted in contact with resistive layer 3, and individual ones of styli 5 are momentarily energized by being temporarily coupled by switches 6 to a voltage source 7 so that a circuit through contact plate 8 and conductive layer 4 is formed to heat a small discrete area of ribbon 1. Each discrete area of the ribbon 1, as so heated, causes a discrete area 12 of the paper 2 to change color.
