This invention relates to a method for locally accessing a file in a distributed non-homogeneous address space comprising in part the steps executed at a custodian node of: (1) creating at least one directory file; (2) making an entry in the directory indicating the file's nonlocal accessing availability; and (3) granting file access rights to nonlocal users; and the further step at a requester node of: (4) generating a pointer to the custodian node directory in response to invocation of the file name. Assume that a number of personal computers are connected into a local network, and that files can be stored at any of these computers. Assume also that the operating system used at each computer is of a type such as might be found in commercially available, disk-based, microprocessor computer systems.
