Word processor operators often use the record ID as a unique way to identify file records. Typically, a hard copy of the record IDs may be kept in the operator's personal files and referred to to identify particular records by the record ID. As a result, it would be confusing to the operators if the record IDs changed dynamically as a record is deleted. Because the record IDs are derived from relative record numbers in a file rather than explicitly stored, a place holder is necessary if the record IDs are not to change. This is accomplished by adding a delete data marker in the file architecture. Whenever a record is deleted, it is replaced by a delete data marker.
