It is possible to effect printing by selectively energizing predetermined areas of a leuco dye impregnated recording medium. Typically, this is accomplished by passing current from a plurality of electrodes through the dye, thereby making it visible. In one embodiment of a scanning printer arrangement which utilizes this printing technology, the source document is held stationary during scanning and colored printing occurs on a continuously moving recording medium. Alternatively, it is possible to synchronously move the source and target mediums on separate drums while holding the scanning mechanism in place.
