Magnetic Tape Testing Method
A data integrity test is performed on magnetic tape dynamically during the
initial and/or final stage of unwinding from a large supply roll onto a spool.
Magnetic tape 1 (Fig. 1) is unwound from a large supply roll 2 and fed into a
vacuum column 3 successively past a write head 4 and a read head 5 and then
wound onto a spool 6. A data integrity test is conducted while a predetermined
length of the tape is being wound onto spool 6. More specifically, data is written
on the tape by write head 4, then read by read head 5, and the errors due to
defects noted, in conventional fashion.
This test must be conducted at a constant speed L considerably lower than
the speed W at which tape can be unwound from the supply roll and wound onto
the cartridge spool. As shown in Fig. 2, this testing is performed for a time t
during acceleration and/or deceleration of the tape to and/or from speed W.
Time t can be adjusted, as desired, under computer control. In this manner, a
small portion of the tape stored on each spool is tested, rather than testing
periodically selected lengths of tape from the supply roll.
