Substrate Connection by Analog Switching to Most Negative Power Supply
This article describes a circuit which allows a chip substrate to be connected
to the most negative power supply available on the chip.
Referring to the figure, two power supplies -V1 and -V2 are available able on
the chip, both being time variable so that one of them may be cut off, permitting
the chip to be supplied from the other one. In this case, the substrate is to be
connected to the more negative power supply.
The circuit comprises transistors T3-T4 and T13-T14, performing an analog
switching function, and diode T5 with transistors Tl-T2 and diode T15 with
transistors T11-T12, performing a comparing function.
If -V1 is the most negative voltage, diode T5 biases transistor T1 and T2 and
diode T15 is OFF. Transistors Tl and T2 supply a current to transistors T3 and
T4, respectively, and a connection is made between the chip substrate and most
negative voltage -V1.
On the other hand, if -V2 is the most negative voltage, the chip substrate is
connected to this voltage through transistors T13 and T14 under control of
transistors T11 and T12.
The analog switch function is built with two series transistors T3-T4 and T13-
T14 due to the emitter-base breakdown voltage which is usually in the range of 5
volts. So the above-represented circuit can be used for negative power supplies
comprised between -10 volts and -5 volts. Additional series transistors are
added for more negative power supplies....
