Tape storage apparatus, such as a rotating tape recorder, the so-called one half inch tape recorders and the one quarter inch tape recorders, can employ fixed block-size recording. When such fixed block-size recording is employed, block numbers are usually assigned to the fixed size record areas. When reading signals from such a tape record, it is advantageous to insure that in the sequence of blocks read the preassigned block numbers have been correctly read. This procedure is also applicable to those tape recorders employing a record area of indeterminate length.
