A machine take-up reel for the reeling of tape received from an automatic threader includes a hub having a latch opening to a cavity containing a serpentine spring. The leader tape enters the hub cavity and is captured and held by the spring. On the first tape wrap, the hub latch is closed by the tape. Closing the hub latch leaves a smooth surface for subsequent tape layers. On rewind, the latch is urged open by the spring after the last wrap of tape is removed. The leader tape can then be extracted from the hub cavity.
