Abstract

A buffer or cache couples one or more hosts (central processing units, communication links, and the like) to a plurality of addressable data storage units. A plurality of ports to the buffer are respectively dedicated to the host and data storage units. The buffer has a plurality of controls which manage the data storage space of the buffer and the data transfers through the buffer between the hosts and the data storage units. The buffer not only contains user data, that data which is being transferred, but also data structures used in connection with control in the data transfers. To facilitate access to the controlling data, the buffer controls have selective access to the controlling data through the dedicated ports when not being used for the dedicated purposes.
