Identification of Polymers by Thermogravimetry and Derivative Thermogravimetry

A method is described for identifying polymers used in products by thermogravimetry and derivative thermogravimetry utilizing a catalog of more than one hundred samples from commercial polymers. Certain polymers such as polycarbonate, 13 percent polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filled, carbon-filled polycarbonate are more difficult to identify by other means. The polymers can be identified by thermogravimetry when instrumental and sample parameters (i.e., heating rate, nature and flow rate of purge gas, amount and shape of sample) are fixed for all samples analyzed. Unique profiles are obtained for more than one hundred polymer samples from thermogravimetric and derivative thermogravimetric curves.
