Normal typewriter style and data entry keyboards employ character shift or font shift mechanisms for entering the alternate code data associated with the usual data keys on a keyboard. A shift button 1 and a shift lock button 2 are normally provided for this function. The purpose of the shift lock button is to maintain the keyboard in the font- or character shifted mode until it is released. The shift button 1 provides a single character-shift function. In order to maintain keybutton 2 in a down or locked position, a variety of mechanical interlocks have previously been provided.
