Method of Minimizing Poll Handshaking Time for an I/O Channel

The polling sequence handshaking time for a data processor I/O channel is reduced by overlapping the poll set-up time for a subsequent I/O device request with the poll depropagation time for a preceding I/O device request. This enables an increased cycle steal I/O data transfer rate and improved interrupt service time.
