This article describes a method for operating a computing apparatus including a data base management (DBM) system to guarantee consistency between stored data and its descriptor. In response to a request to change a data descriptor, all users of the corresponding data are quiesced, and any users are prevented from accessing either the data or its descriptor. The descriptor and its data are then changed, and in response to a commit, the changed descriptor and data are made available to all users. In response to a rollback, the changes are undone, and the original data and descriptors are made available to all users. In response to a data base utility start, changes by other users to data descriptors required by the utility process are inhibited until the utility end.
