Registry of sheets against a reference edge is assured by a flexible conical
roller oriented at an angle relative to the reference edge.
As seen in the top view of Fig. 1 and front view of Fig. 2, sheet 10 is
introduced along plate 11 in its feed path and is intended to have the left edge
register against reference edge 12. If sheet 10 is introduced in the orientation
shown in Fig. 1 and an ordinary angled roller directs sheet 10 towards reference
edge 12, the leading corner 15 will initially contact reference edge 12 and tend to
crumple, a condition sometimes referred to as "nose diving". Cone roller 20 is
positioned with the open or greater radius end 21 towards reference edge 12,
and the axis of rotation is angled relative to reference edge 12, as best seen in
Fig. 1. A rotary power source (not shown) is applied to drive shaft 22 to rotate
roller 20 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2.
The conical shape of flexible roller 20 exerts a clockwise torque on sheet 10
as it passes over guide plate 11. If sheet 10 is skewed relative to reference edge
12, as shown in Fig. 3, roller 20 feeds sheet 10 as shown by the arrows. The
feed direction is forward as well as rotating the sheet clockwise, as viewed in
Figs. 1 and 3 and further as illustrated by arrow 25 in Fig. 1. Sheet 10 is fed in
