In order to improve system performance, particularly that associated with I/O operations, a technique is described for fixing I/O-related pages in main storage' In order to perform I/O operations in the IBM System/370, all pages containing either channel command words (CCWs), or data referenced by the CCWs, must be fixed in real storage. This is due to operating systems (SCPs) executing in virtual addresses, which requires that much time be spent relocating channel program real addresses. The described technique improves system performance under these conditions.
