Each key button 10 (Fig. 1) has a top face 11 including a field 12 of twelve shift-selectable Kanji characters, arranged in four rows and three columns. Top face 11 may also include an index field 13 containing one or more index characters useful for locating the selectable characters in field 11. Some keys may also have a cue stripe 14. The visible front face 15 may contain further selectable characters, mostly Roman, katakana, numeric or function characters.
