Scanning in the fast axis of a raster cathode ray tube (CRT) display is skewed so that the electron beam traverses a different pel (picture element) column (for vertical scanning) or pel row (for horizontal scanning) of each successive character. This allows memory interleaving of the character generator read-only memories (ROMs) to increase the bandwidth of the character generator without decreasing the cycle time or increasing the number of memory cells.
