Roll Surface Velocity Measurement

This disclosure teaches the use of an incremental encoder with an axis mounted wheel running on the surface of the roll to precisely measure the roll's surface velocity. A high speed PC data acquisition counting card is used to accurately determine the time between each of the successive pulses of the encoder. Then by knowing the diameter of the encoder axis mounted wheel and the time between each pulse of the encoder, the instantaneous surface velocity can be determined. With surface velocity versus time data, a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) can be calculated on the data to identify the mechanical/electrical components contributing to the velocity variation.
