Abstract

In printers of the type shown and described in U.S. Patent 4,000,486, it is possible to half-index characters, i.e., print characters displaced a half-line down from the regular character base line. In this way, subscripts and superscripts can be printed, the latter by half-spacing down from the previous line. Also, characters can be underlined by forcing two of the bottom lines of a character box to black. (Logical one signals signify black, but the logical zeros are used to write the white portions of a page by discharging the static charge imparted to the photoconductor.)
