Regulating Switching Power Supply
This multiple output, particularly multiple level output, switching power supply
circuit arrangement provides optimum regulation of output potentials within
predetermined allowable limits.
A typical embodiment is shown in Fig. 1 wherein input AC power is applied at
input terminals 11, 12 to a line frequency rectifier and filter assembly 14. A high
frequency inverter circuit 16 conveys power from the assembly 14 to the primary
winding of a power transformer 18. The transformer 18 has a multiple of
secondary windings 21, 22 ... 2n each individually connected to high frequency
rectifier and filter assemblies 31, 32 ... 3n, delivering power at output terminals
41, 42 ... 4n.
The quantity of power at the output terminals is desired to be substantially
constant within predetermined limits. Variations in the quantity of power drawn
are smoothed by varying the power input to the primary winding of the
transformer 18. This quantity of power is varied in accordance with the
instantaneous condition of a pulse energy modulator circuit 50, for example, a
conventional pulse-width modulator circuit. The latter is controlled by the output
of a comparator circuit 52 which is arranged to compare the instantaneous output
of a ramp generator circuit 54 and the output level of an arithmetic summing
circuit arrangement 56.
