Digital Voltage Regulator for Switching Power Supplies

A voltage regulator circuit is described that is implemented with digital logic. The circuit uses a digital voltage level to program counters instead of the standard linear voltage level intersecting a ramp at a voltage comparator. The logic components of this digital circuit can be made smaller through the use of large-scale integration (LSI) technology to give a size advantage over present regulators. Also, the circuit provides an 8-bit digital representation of the regulated voltage that can later be used for more sophisticated control by a microprocessor, e.g., sequential power-up, power-down detection etc.
