The IBM 1403 and similar train or chain printers rapidly move type in the direction of the line of print. For closely spaced bar code patterns, the variation in the firing time of the impacting print hammers may result in an overlap between adjacent bars, which adversely affects bar code readability. The bar code design of this article provides means for reliably reading bar codes despite the variation of bar code spacing.
