In sensor technology and in many branches of analog design, such as power supplies, it is often necessary to use potentiometers to compensate for component deficiencies and hold down product cost. These potentiometers are usually used for final adjustment of a sub-assembly, the adjustment being a manual operation prone to errors. Hence, the use of potentiometers is avoided in favor of more expensive components except where they cannot readily be avoided.
