Independent Biasing within Development Zone
A magnetic brush developer is described having a plurality of magnetic
brush devices each biased with a predetermined bias voltage.
The magnetic brush developer 10 comprises a plurality of magnetic brushes
12 each provided with electrically isolated mounting adjacent to a photoconductor
14 having a latent image to be developed. A power source 16 is provided to
impress a preselected voltage on each of the magnetic brushes 12 by connection
to a terminal 18 which extends outside developer housing 20.
By proper selection of the voltage levels, different development
characteristics are provided at each of the magnetic brushes 12 in developer 10.
For example, the entry zone brush 22 is set at the opposite potential to the image
potential to a level to enhance image development to remove previous image
toner, or at a level of image enhancement as not to remove high amounts of
toner from carrier material, therefore overcharging the carrier component.
The next zones into the developer on brush 24 could be set to higher image
potentials (closer to max image delta), allowing the charged carrier to mix into
toned developer max between zones.
Additional potentials for each zone of developer on brushes 26, 28 would
further improve the image without overcharging the carrier component to the
point that it would pull toner from the image area before exiting the development
zone, or being carried out of the developer due to high charge....
