This invention relates to a method for executing transaction COMMIT/ABO operations in a demand/response protocol among communicating nodes in a directed network within an environment of node failures and lost messages. The method steps comprise the transmission of an intent message and positive acknowledgment from all remote sites. This positive acknowledgment serves as a condition precedent to the sending of a COMMIT message which completes the COMMIT OPERATION. Any negative acknowledgment results in the transmission of an ABORT message which must be acknowledged by all remote sites. This method eliminates COMMIT acknowledgments without dependency on session resynchronization techniques.
