Abstract

Facsimile data contains both vertical and horizontal correlations. Horizontal correlation appears in the consecutive occurrences, or runs, of the same symbol. Run-length encoding thus takes advantage of horizontal correlation but not vertical correlation. A facsimile compaction scheme will not attain its full potential unless the vertical correlation is also accounted for. A relative address coding (RAC) scheme accounts for vertical correlation in accordance with the following rule:
