This circuit will tell if the connections to a coaxial cable center conductor 10 and shield 12 are reversed. Because of the difference in area of the center conductor 10 and the shield 12, differences in resistance can be used to distinguish between them. One end of the shield and center conductor are connected to a device 14, while the ends of both are coupled across two equal center-tapped resistors 16 and 18. A differential amplifier 20 is then used to sense the difference in potential across the two resistors. The difference signal is then fed through hexadecimal switching circuitry 22, which is programmable by cable part number, to a hexadecimal display 24 for showing an error message.
