Synthesis of a Derivative of [1,1] Ferrocenophane

The compound [1,1]ferrocenophane (formula 1), has been proposed for use in solar cells for the production of hydrogen from water. In order to attach this material in a permanent way to the surface of various electrodes, a functionalized derivative is needed, which can form strong bonds between compound 1 and the surface. We have now been able to prepare a derivative of 1, which carries a trichlorosilyl group on one of the bridge methylene units. By reaction of this trichlorosilyl functionality of the compound 2 with hydroxyl groups on the surface of semiconductor or other surfaces, bonds are formed which attach the ferrocenophane permanently to the surfaces.
