Abstract

The task-handling apparatus of U. S. Patent 4,177,513 can be improved a Send Message Wait (SENDMW) instruction which is particularly useful for Input/Output Management (IOM) tasks. Normally, when an IOM task issues a Send Message (SENDM) instruction to send a message (SRM) to an Input/Output operational unit (OU) queue, the IOM task has to wait for the operational unit to perform its function. The IOM task issues a Receive Message (RECM) instruction to the OU queue, but there won't be a message for it and the IOM task dispatching element (TDE) is dequeued from the task dispatching queue (TDQ) and enqueued to the OU queue as a waiting TDE.
