A space management and file directory updating procedure is described where the bits are non-erasable. There exist storage media that allow 0 bits to be changed to 1 bits but do not allow the reverse. Examples of such non-erasable storage are punched paper tape and video disks. In general, such media are assumed to be impossible to update.
