Charged Particle Atomizer for Lubrication Spray
At present there is a growing concern for conservation and control of
lubricants sprayed on existing and future disk products.
In manufacturing, the lubricant is presently sprayed and atomized onto the
surface of the disk with an air brush. Through atomization, much of the lubricant
is atomized off into the air and never reaches the surface of the disk. Through
this atomization process, the lower molecular weight lubricant molecules might
have a tendency to fly off, never reaching the surface of the disk, possibly
altering the efficiency of the lubricant.
If the particles of spray from the air brushes were given a negative charge,
they would have a tendency to seek a ground and race to the surface of the disk
like filings to a magnet. The negatively charged particles would also overcome
the spinning disk turbulence when applied. This would enable an atomized spot
size to be controlled, thus controlling process repeatability and cost.
