A sampling system may be operated synchronously with a sampling interval of ts (sampling frequency f(s) = 1/t(s)) at data rates of f(d) = fs/2 without loss of information. When, however, the data is asynchronous and occurs with an apparent frequency shift of +/- delta f(d) then delta f(d) + f(d) >/- fs/2 >/- f(d) - delta f(d) and both instantaneous and cumulative detection errors may result depending on the magnitude and rate of change of delta fd.
