Built In Alignment Circuit for Fiber Optic Silicon Optical Bench

Alignment of small communication fibers 10 to LEDs (light emitting diodes) and lasers 12 is presently tedious and non-automated. The use of a silicon optical bench 14 with precision etched ""V'' grooves 16 is a present method of easing the alignnent. Fig. 1 shows the silicon optical bench packaging technique. Although the technique simplifies fiber 10 placement, proper emitter 12 placement is determined by manual methods. A solution is presented to ease emitter alignment and, in addition, provide detection diodes that can be used for operational test and/or laser feedback control.
