Machine Jam Detection Circuit
This jam detection circuit for monitoring machine motion distinguishes
between sudden and intentional stops by sensing the rate of decay of the motion
Referring to Fig. 1, a signal source representing machine motion, such as a
tachometer 1, is supplied to a full-wave rectifier 2 to insure a positive polarity
regardless of motion direction. In order to minimize the effect of signal ripple
from the rectifier, caused by motor speed variation, the gain of amplifier 3 is
adjusted such that the slowest operating speed of the machine producing signal
V1 will produce a saturated output V2. Output V2 will then approximate +Vcc.
Points V3 and V4 each serve as inputs through respective resistors 4 and 5
to differential amplifier 6. The points V3 and V4 are also connected to respective
R-C networks 8 and 9, with the time constant of network 8 being ten times that of
network 9. The output V5 of amplifier 6 is connected to a relay 10 or annunciator
to stop the machine drive motor.
Referring to both Figs. 1 and 2, for normal operation the output V2 of
amplifier 3 is saturated so that V3 and V4 are equal and V5 is zero. If a jam
occurs to suddenly stop the output of tachometer 1, output V2 falls and both V3
and V4 start to decay, with V3 decaying more slowly. This difference causes the
output signal V5 from amplifier 6 to rise and actuate relay 10. During starting and
