Xerographic carrier beads, which are coated with a low surface energy
material, such as PTFE or FEP, are used to clean the steel balls of a ball mill.
The use of a ball mill to mix powder constituents often requires cleaning the
mill's steel balls to prevent contamination of a powder composition by a prior
powder composition. In order to accomplish this cleaning, the steel balls are
removed and agitated for a short period of time with coated xerographic carrier
beads. These carrier beads are coated with a relatively soft fluorocarbon, such
as PTFE or FEP. Any steel ball contaminant, such as a dye, a pigment, rust, or
the like, which coats the steel balls becomes embedded in the carrier bead's
coating, as it is cleaned off the steel balls.
The now-contaminated carrier beads are separated from the now-clean steel
balls by the use of a screen. The steel balls will now be covered by a thin,
protective coating of fluorocarbon.
