Abstract

In checking a computer system which has failed, generally the problem will be with one of the CPU, the I/O device, or the cable connecting the two. In order to determine which of these three items is the problem. a technique of a diagnostic wrap is commonly used. In using a diagnostic wrap, both the CPU and the I/O device contain diagnostic programs, which send out data signals to be applied back to the sending device. Since the transmitted signals are known, known signals should be received by the device, and a simple check of the received signal will indicate if the device is properly operating.
