Disclosed is a text compaction technique which uses the statistic structure internal to words as the primary mode to effect data compaction. The encoding/decoding technique also allows any combination of defined letters, symbols, etc., to be handled by providing an "exit" from the basic algorithm to another mode to allow completion of a word. A textual word is defined as beginning after a space in ordinary text and continuing until another space is encountered.
