This apparatus provides versatile low-cost programmable automatic engra operations. Robotic structures such as those previously described [*] and having supporting arms are utilized in the apparatus, as shown in the drawing. The drawing illustrates the engraving portion in detail. An electric cutter motor 2 having an engraving cutter 3 is attached to a slide 4 on the end of one arm. Slide 3 is air-actuated from air cylinder 5 to advance and retract engraving cutter 3 to the surface to be engraved. In the case of serial number engraving on parts or subassemblies, for example, the number can be keyed into an associated terminal, or a badge or card reader can be used. The unit can be mounted so that it can engrave from the top, side, or bottom. The engraving can be in block or script style characters.
