Programmable Planar/Board Stiffener

A packaging concept for packaging cards, modules, and discrete components on a planar package requires a unique stiffener for each variation of the number or location of cards mounted on that package. A programmable stiffener is proposed which uses a base stiffener with ribs that are foam backed which allows for penetration of module pins and engineering change wires, and multiple guide bars which are located over pins located on the planar package and then held in place by the clamping action produced by screwing on the top stiffener. The card guides are slotted for all available card positions which allows them to be used for any of the available card socket variations. By adding the guide bars, as needed, from one or both ends, this stiffener can be used for numerous packaging designs.
